Many of the on-line options will be theory courses to do with driving and equipment operations. However, we also have courses on a wide variety of other topics.     The Fuel Miser - a demo course

This short course focuses on ways in which truck drivers can save fuel. In a user-friendly, interactive format, users can review some old ways of driving, and look at some improved methods of driving, while saving fuel, money, and the environment. There is a quiz at the end, and those who pass it can download an individualized course completion certificate. Try this course - it will give you an idea of the format and operating characteristics of most Coastal Training on-line courses.

 Heavy Equipment Operations Courses

    Backhoe Loader Operations - Level 1

This is a course designed for new and experienced operators. It looks at backhoe operations - general and specific. Included in the course is information on machine components, pre-operating safety inspections, regular operations, and some special scenarios. With quizzes, summaries, and a glossary along the way, this is a friendly course, one that allows its users to proceed at their own paces. Final computer test at the end,our Backhoe Course Companion to download, and a certificate of completion after the test. BONUS: Backhoe inspection form.

    Lift Truck Operations - Orientation

This is a course designed as a beginning for those who will learn to operate forklifts. In basic and clear terms, the course outlines the characteristics, components, and functions of regular forklifts, and it examines some safety issues and hazards relative to the operation of lift trucks. Included is our Lift Truck Course Companion, a text overview of the course, and a set of pre-operating forklift inspection forms. This course has a quiz at the end, and upon successful completion of this, trainees have the option of downloading and printing a customized course certificate to keep.

This course looks at the Canadian National Safety Code in general and at Hours of Service regulations in particular. Designed for drivers, fleet managers, trainers, compliance officers, and others who have to do with National Safety Code issues, the course is user-friendly and self-directed, with short "check-ups" along the way, a quiz at the end, and a Course Companion (pdf) to take away.

This course looks at the National Safety Code (Canada), outlining the regulations and related issues.     WHMIS

WHMIS stands for the "Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System". It is a system designed to protect workers from the effects of hazardous products in the workplace. WHMIS education is required by law for many job functions in Canada, and this on-line training option can be suitable for many people who cannot obtain this training in the workplace or who wish the privacy and flexibility of taking this training at their own pace, on their own computers.

    Effective Writing For Grown-Ups

This is a course that assists adults in writing more effectively. Going "back to the basics", it looks at the elements of good sentences, and at sentence construction in general. The course outlines common writing problems, such as sentence fragments, run-on sentences, and faulty parallelism, and it provides assistance in eliminating these and other common writing problems. In a friendly, self-paced format, this course reviews our old composition concepts and helps us to analyse our own writing with the goal of improving all of our written communication.

    Effective Writing for Grown-Ups Level 2

The subtitle for this course is "A Model for Successful Writing". In a user-friendly format, this course takes the adult student through a process of writing a "report". Beginning with identifying the writing objective and moving through a process of refining the topic, creating an outline, and completing a piece of writing, the course emphasizes that, with a simple writing system in mind and a little "pre-work", most unconfident writers can create an effective piece of writing! This course was designed for people who find themselves in the position of Classroom Instructor, and who have little or no experience in doing this task. The course looks at instructor attributes, at the concept of learning, at developing instructing goals, and at strategies that can be used effectively. Lesson planning is outlined, along with tried-and-true assessment strategies. This is a friendly course, designed for new instructors in any topic area. Our downloadable Course Companion is included with the on-line course, there is a quiz, and a completion certificate is generated at the end of the program.

 Snow and Ice Control Courses

    Snow and Ice Control - Pre-Trip Inspection

This course was designed for the municipal winter road maintenance operator. In a step-by-step, user-controlled format, it outlines the required inspections of common snow and ice control vehicles, from 1-ton trucks to tandem axles, from anti-icing vehicles to pre-wetting systems. The philosophy of the program is that all operators must be familiar with the equipment that they operate, and completing safety and operating inspections of that equipment is an integral part of the job of a professional equipment operator.

    Snow and Ice Control: The Basics

This course is an introduction to municipal winter road maintenance, geared to the equipment operator. It is also useful as a refresher course for existing operators.     National Safety Code in Municipalities

This course serves as an overview of the National Safety Code for those who work in municipalities. It outlines the National Safety Code, its rationale, objectives, and its specifics, with the purpose of assisting those cities, towns, districts and other municipal operators, fleet managers, and safety personnel in understanding their obligations with regard to the NSC.
